Product Description
RoofBag EXPLORER rooftop cargo carriers offer great protection at an economical price. Constructed with a combination of Radio Frequency welding at the top of the carrier and traditional stitching at the front corners and the zipper flap, this car top carrier is recommended when heavy rain is not expected frequently. Even though the EXPLORER cargo carrier uses stitching on the corners and along the zipper flap, water protection is excellent, since any possible moisture wicking through the needle holes is minimized by a double folded, double stitched manufacturing process. The material used in the RoofBag is 18-oz tight-knit polyester fabric, which has been double-coated with vinyl. Besides being totally waterproof, this material is very tough and durable. It is treated to resist the damaging effect of UV rays. It won't fade or deteriorate, even with constant exposure to the sun. (Roofbag also makes an 11 cu. ft. version for smaller cars).

Extremely please with product. Excellent Value. Easy to install. Durable. Relatively easy to pack into small bag that comes with the purchase. Used it on 700 mile round trip. Did not encounter rain but I believe it would do a good job to keep contents dry in the heaviest of storms. This is the largest bag I could find.

My family of 5 just returned from a 2 wk vacation of going back home and visiting family. We live in the southeast part of AL and traveled all the way to PA and MD...950 miles each way! Our total mileage was 3,152...and this bag held up just fine and worked awesome! Of course we ran into rain over the course of the vacation and even a serious thunderstorm with tornado warnings and heavy, heavy rain....not one thing in that bag was wet..I was very impressed with this bag...inside of it we had 2 large suitcases, 3 large duffle bags, 1 medium duffle bag, a portable crib, a large trash bag filled with dirty laundry, and an umbrella stroller and we still had space for more! It didn't damage our roof( we drive an SUV (Suzuki XL-7) The only downside for us was one of our straps that came with the bag broke(probably bc we maybe made it too tight??)but we brought extra just in case that happened...so be prepared extra straps can't hurt! For as much as we loaded and unloaded that bag and tugged on it and don't forget the weather...I can't complain...As a woman and mother of 3 not losing any items, nothing getting wet or damaged, that's all that mattered to me! We just purchased an extra strap on amazon today to replace the one that broke...simple fix! Great product and very affordable..we will definately use this again and again...who needs the plastic shells that cost $300-$500 when you can have this one for less then $100!!

5 out of 5 stars Great beyond words   September 9, 2009

We have three cars and not one of them has a roof rack. Our largest car is a Hyundai Accent with a large trunk but not enough room for all our gear, bags and Ice-chest. We needed to fit, three adults and a 82lb dog in the car along with our stuff to go to our family reunion. I took a chance on this bag out of desperation.

We were very pleased with it's performance. The non-slip mat is part of its success. It was easy to put on the car and secure. The tie-downs actually go around the bag and the roof and through the door openings inside the car. We applied tension inside the car and secured the loose ends vs doing it on the outside. This way there was nothing flapping in the breeze. We also stopped after about 5 miles to check the bag, to see if it really would stay on the roof. It was very secure.

We did a practice pack before our trip. The secret to success is to put the heavier items on bottom of the bag and the lighter item in last (try to fill all the empty areas). The fuller it is, the easier it is to pack and tighten down.

We went from Portland, Oregon area to Crater Lake. We experienced minimal drag and our mileage was not significantly affected. We did not experience the whistling sound that accompanies regular roof racks.

Thank you to the designer and manufacturer for this great product. When we were done, the bag and mat packed away nicely and is sitting on the shelf waiting for our next trip. We didn't have to do any rearranging to store it.

5 out of 5 stars economic and portable   September 6, 2009

We purchased this roofbag for a week long camping trip in Maine. The ten-hour drive from Pennsylvania to Maine and back was in a pouring rain. We met Hurricane Bill on the way to and hurricane Denny on the way back. Everything in the bag stayed dry and no water leaked into our car either.

We were planning to install roof rallies system and a pod. The cost would be around $1,000. And that would be only on one car. With this roofbag, either one of our family cars can be used for vacations. It holds everything we needed for camping and still has room left.

We noticed the vibrating noise a couple of times. After tightening the straps properly, the noise was gone.

For us, the roofbag served its purpose very well.

3 out of 5 stars Almost great   August 25, 2009

My family has used the roofbag twice, both times driving round trip to Michigan from Georgia. The first year we thought it was great and would have given it 5 stars, but this year we had problems with the straps vibrating and causing a lot of noise. I mean a LOT of noise. I have no idea why it made noise this year and not last year, as we are in the same car and packed it the same way. It was very unpleasant and we had to pull over several times and repack the bag, hoping that would resolve the problem. Eventually whatever we did worked and that problem was resolved, but it added an hour onto an already long trip.

This year, when we got up one morning, we noticed it had rained. No problem, the bag was dry inside. BUT, the straps had wicked the rain into the interior of our car, and the seats were soaked. Lesson learned there, don't leave the straps attached when you stop overnight.

Then on our return, we drove through rain, and the straps again wicked the rain into the car. Driving with rain dripping onto your head or shoulder or pillow or whatever was NOT pleasant. I'm looking for a way to resolve this issue, since we naturally cannot guarantee that we will not be driving through rain on our 1000 mile trips Up North.

We really like the fact that the bag doesn't require a roof rack and if we can 1) figure out how to avoid the vibrating strap noise, and 2) figure out how to prevent the straps from wicking rain into the car, then we'll highly recommend this product.
