Good horns but could be louder July 28, 2010 R. Sagalatyy There horns can be installed without a relay even if your vehicle has only one stock horn. Just connect two of them in parallel. Both of them draw 5.4 Amperes and usually one stock horn draws 4-5A. So they will not burn your stock relay.
Regarding the sound, this is typical old American car, low sound. If you want to have a nicer one, buy the same set with 500-600Hz which is also sold at amazon. What I figured out, when you drive, especially on freeway, and signal at someone, they notice your horn sound when it has a higher pitch but not as high as those installed on Japanese small sedans like Civic, Corolla or Mazda 3. Physics of the ear of a human being is that it hears high pitched sound better that a low one from a close range; however, from the far range, it is vise versa. So you need a balance here. Horns with the pitch of 500 - 600 Hz is a good choice. If you combine two or three or four horns, the loudness will increase but not much, the pitch will change if all the horns have different frequencies. And for those who don't know physics: dB = decibels, it is not a measure of loudness, it is intensity of the sound. Thus, a horn with 108dB can sound louder than the one with 115 dB. The PIAAs, both provide intensity of 115dB but both!. My suggestion is to combine them with your stock ones or one (if you have only one) by using automotive relay (12V, 30/40A, SPDT can be bought at Radioshack). Use 20A in-line fuse before the relay. Wiring, I'm not gonna explain it here. Look up google how to to it. There are many posts and DIYs. Also youtube has many videos.
If you want louder horns, buy FIAMM 130dB both high and low tones but you will need a relay to install them. They sound louder than PIAAs but I didn't like their pitch alone nor did I like PIAAs pitch either. So I found solution for myself. I installed 4 horns: two PIAAs (400 and 500 Hz - could be 500 and 600Hz) and two FIAMMs. And of course I needed relay too. Now my Civic sounds differently and people obey! What a nice and loud sound output. It's just BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU. Get out of my way!
It's a horn. April 1, 2010 Brock Landers (Milwaukee, WI) Purchased this product to replace factory wuss horn that was dying a slow death due to water ingestion. (Thanks for going to school for a decade and still being morons, engineers.) Product arrived on time, and installation was as expected. Simple wiring is necessary, 2 leads included.
Loudness is a subjective thing. I think these are ever so slightly louder than great factory horns. The tone, on the other hand, is excellent, IMO. Check PIAA's website for an audio clip.
Overall, 4 stars, because i give out 5 very rarely, and how "in love" can you be with a horn? Push button, makes noise. Good Product.
Well-made horn February 10, 2010 L. Opina (Ypsilanti, Michigan USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Installed this on my Montero Sport. I had to splice some wires since these included flat connectors. The Montero Sport had rounded ones. Overall, the install was fairly straight-forward. The horns were really loud. I highly recommend them if you drive on roads with a lot of drivers using their cell phones while driving.
Get their attention January 28, 2010 T. Carlson (Knoxville, TN United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Wanted to replace the wimpy "scooter" horn on my Suzuki VStrom. Too many times I have had someone change lanes on me or threaten to. I wanted something that would get their attention - command their attention. I saw these that were relatively lightweight and promised good sound levels. The installation took some effort since it required installing a relay, associated wiring, and finding a good place to hide the horns. Overall, I am very pleased. They do get the attention of mindless drivers. Their sound is something akin to your father's Lincoln from the 60's.
So far so good. November 18, 2009 RG I changed a set of WOLO's out for these and have to say these are more of an attention
getter than the WOLO's were. I like these horns so far. I just mounted them today
so I have hardly any street experience with them as of yet, but from what I heard
in my carport, they should handle "obstructions" very well.
Not as loud as an compressed air horn, but pretty darn loud from what I can tell.
I'm glad I bought the lower freq horns rather that the higher freq set as I feel
the lower has the better sound pitch for my tastes.
And yes two horns plus two 18 gauge grounding wires with connectors as well as
instructions came in the PIAA package. Once again very happy with Amazon for the
quick and well packed shipment.
